The Shuty is one of the earliest attempts to create a hybrid AR-15 style semi-automatic 9mm pistol.

The Shuty itself is an upper receiver meant to mate with an AR-15 lower - either a primarily-printed AR-15 lower like the Defense Distributed v5 lower (which the Shuty was designed around) or a real AR-15 lower.

The Shuty v1 is designed to be used with an aftermarket Glock-style barrel and a custom-printed magazine, which is mounted in the AR-15 lower via an adapter.

The name “Shuty” was chosen as an homage to Philip A. Luty, an English firearms designer who was repeatedly prosecuted by the British government for creating and distributing plans for fabricating homemade arms. The Shuty v1 mimics the aesthetic of Luty’s “SMG 9mm Parabellum”, described in his book "Expedient Homemade Firearms".

The Shuty inspired a long line of revisions and upgrades, the development of which continues to this day. **As such, the Shuty v1’s design is currently considered obsolete, and has been superseded by more advanced designs.**
