26.5 PUMP, Eugene StenAR, BALR

The Summer of DIY Defense.

N0PEL, noted creator of the M1337 Gating Gun and RBC-9, has just released his next major project: the Bolt Action Light Rifle [ BALR ] - Version B1. This is a DIY 3D printable straight-pull bolt action rifle in a scout-type form factor. The BALR primarily uses AR15 components (the barrel, bolt, and fire control group) and the resulting rifle is quite lightweight - between 3-6 pounds empty - depending on the rest of the parts used. 

Another major project in refinement of the AR implementation is from new creator GreenWhiskey, who has finally launched the Eugene StenAR, which converts the AR-9 system into an MP5 design style. The design itself is a remix of a remix going all the way back to the U-Bolt and is one of the more iconic feeling lower receiver projects in the space. Excellent work and we're looking forward to seeing what else GreenWhiskey has to bring to DIY Defense.

Rounding up our new releases this month, we have the updated 26.5mm Pump V1.1 from OG designer DannyMeatball, who has been pushing the envelope for years, and The Rat King by Emblemata. The DMB system is a pump action, magazine fed 26.5mm signaling device featuring a locking bolt. Resembling the Squad Support Weapon 40, this is a more mature exploration of the signal launchers that we featured just last month. Both files should be checked out emergently, which is actually a really cool (and not retarded) way to use that word.

WIRED PRINTS THE MANGIONE GUN

In celebration of The Gatalog's greatest hit, Wired recently reproduced Luigi Mangione's alleged 3D printed frame and suppressor build. Along the way reporter Greenberg, joined by James Reeves and PSR, discusses our space in great techincal, legal, and historical detail.

MODULAR EXPERIMENTS

If Guncad's low-hanging fruits have been picked after these few years, there are still new design attitudes evolving within DIY Defense. Last month we saw BLC's ReferenceModels project in culmination, and this month we are already seeing hybrid designs building upon these. We'll call this approach "modularity," and it yields from easily adjusted primary STEP files.

The first design to highlight this approach is the Slap-Stick by GreenWhiskey, which allows users to configure their AR platform for a forward handle to manually manipulate the rear charging handle. You can essentially add an MP5-style of hammer charging to an AR platform without needing to do any internal manipulation of the system. While this is not the most strictly useful of ideas, it indicates that you can in fact just print out many of the new features you'd like to add to a gun.

We follow this example with a parametric compensator in the form of the Ice Cream Sandwhich by pembie000industries. Is this an example of seeking function over form? There's a tendency in our world to emulate or remix existing platforms, but this simple muzzle device indicates a reset in thinking and orientation.
