In the past few weeks there have been noteworthy developments in the DIY Defense Space. Laffs Dynamics is at it again with his Glock Ghost Ring Sights, which are a simple solution for acquiring a fast sight picture when practice shooting. The AP-9/FGC-9 line of PCC's has a fully featured update with the Partisan-9. This build has a variety of improvements to the recoil system, as well as the bolt, which aid in useability and construction while retaining a fairly dynamic aesthetic. Nguyenkvvn has published the MEPR lower receiver for the Sig Sauer MPX PCC, which is a fairly rare parts kit, but well worth the effort for a high quality build.

Going back through the DEFCAD catalog to highlight some of our favorite designs, we find the Double Barrel AR by Stubbs.

The Double-Barrel “Bolt Together” AR is achieved through simply doubling the width of a lower reciever and creating linkages between the upper recievers and fire control groups as needed. Two uppers and two magazines are placed into the assembly, and away we go. While the base model maintains a standard shoulder-fired design, adding the DSMG (direct mount spade grip) converts it into something more like a mounted / emplaced weapon. Note that the DSMG can be configured in both separate and dual trigger modes!

DEFCAD is best known as a CAD repository, but the thousands of models we offer are not the only types of defense related information we provide to the public. There are a significant number of technical documents offered at site and we have recently uploaded materials for the M4A1 and M16A2 platfroms from DTIC. The first is a 'Fire to Destruction Test' and the second a record of 'Barrel & Hand Guard Temperature Ranges'. Much of the highest quality data available on firearms platforms still primarily exists in books and government reports, and DEFCAD will continue to collate and make discoverable this techincal data for the enterprising gunsmith.

There are elementary limitations with 3D Printing as it relates to DIY Defense: 1) Cost 2) Strength. Though there have been a variety of techniques explored to overcome these boundaries, none is as elegant as creating spaces for fixturing on designs to just require a hexagonal nut, heated with a lighter and then melted into place. You'll see this feature all over the place in more recent printable designs and you can see from the above video how easy and effective the process is for your own projects.
