The FamAR is a prototype AR15 bullpup that utilizes features of the FAMAS.
Externally the FamAR resembles the FAMAS, and matches the surprisingly comfortable ergonomic shape. Internally the FamAR is an AR15 modern sporting rifle free from the picky lever delay action and unreliability with nonstandard ammunition. The end user can use AR15 parts to make a clone of the coolest looking Cold War rifle, or something from their favorite videogame.
This release includes a simplified and traditional carry handle top handguard, and the low pro chopped looking handguard resembling the FAMAS Felin and Valorise style prototypes. Included with these are their respective top and side charging handles, but they can be interchanged.
This release is based on the G2 variant, but future addons will include an F1 style lower handguard. There is no rifle grenade sights or rear safety selector as those parts would have no function on this semi auto ar15 derivative. A rifle grenade sight adapter for common rifle grenade sights can be added if requested, along with any other popular picks. The sight system for the FAMAS Felin is also mostly complete on my work bench.
Additional Notes:
-The FamAR will have options for bolt hold open. It will be accessible through a hole in the cheek rest. It can be made without it to more closely resemble the FAMAS, which does not have any bolt hold open features. The rather violent lever delay action would surely break any attempt at a bolt hold open device on the original. Most period firearms do not have this feature either.
-The FamAR bolt can not be manually locked open because the bottom of the bolt catch is not accessible and the charging handle collides with the rear of the reciever before the bolt reaches the bolt catch. It only goes far back enough to pick up rounds from the magazine. Ensure that you pull the charging handle fully to the rear or you will not load the first round. The bolt will go through the full stroke for all subsequent rounds and lock back on the last round where it can be released with the bolt release. The charging handle can not be used to release the bolt.
So far the major components that are not printed are as follows:
-Kentri 3.5" buffer system
This was the shortest possible buffer I could use and still use a standard AR15 bolt carrier. I need a standard carrier to be able to swap a left ejecting BCG and upper into the platform for a later release of the left handed version. Cheap compared to other options.
-AimSport Wraith 13.5" Mlok Handguard
This was necessary to mount the top and bottom handguard to. The FamAR has a free floating barrel and the handguards are mounted to the rigid metal handguard under the cosmetic parts.
-KM Slick AR15 upper reciever
The slick upper fits inside the FamAR chassis and doesnt have any protruding features. The FAMAS does not have an ejection port cover or forward assist, and this upper looks very similar. They have a left and right ejecting version that doesn't cost too much. A milspec upper can be substituted. You will need to file off the anti-rotation tabs on the handguard.
-Milspec Charging Handle.
I used a milspec charging handle inside the FamAR, but it needs to be heavily modified. The rear part of the FamAR charging handle is drilled and tapped into the top of the milspec charging handle, and the latch is removed. The charging handle is also cut down to the width of the FamAR internal parts.
Milspec AR15 components that are not modified:
-Trigger, hammer, disconnector, standard FCG assembly minus safety
-Standard M16 bolt carrier and bolt, BCG assembly
-Standard ar15 barrel, ideally appropriate length. If so desired the platform is compatible with other calibers
-Standard ar15 low profile gas block and gas tube appropriate for the selected barrel length and profile
-Standard AR15 Magazine Catch. The FamAR is not compatible with left handed magazine releases
-Stanag Magazine. The FamAR has a FAMAS length magwell and is too long to fit M3 pmags or bulkier magazines
-Muzzle device appropriate for barrel chosen
Update 1-31-2023:
A prototype version of the buffer cover/ stock was included in the initial release, this has been remedied.
The left handed DLC parts, a DLC front sling mount, and DLC F1 handguard have been added.
Update 6-18-2023:
Famas SMG 'Commando front end DLC
