P17 RMR and Docter Cut Optics Plates

about

I recently picked up a Kel-Tec P17 for plinking. It has worked great. I bought it with the expectation of making a red dot mount. Most (all?) P17 mounts are for RMR cuts instead of Docter cuts. I made the optic mount for a Docter Cut red dot profile. I shot about 500 rounds of standard velocity 40 gr CCI 22lr rounds with only 1 failure to feed. I figure the 1 round failure is decent enough with 22lr to blame it on the ammo, not the mount and sight.

The red dot I used for the Docter Cut was the TRUGLO TRU-TEC 1X23MM 3 MOA MICRO RED DOT SIGHT TG8100B. It was a cheap daily deal from PSA and it worked... Not the best optic in the world but also not necessarily a self defense weapon that needs the best reliability and a 24/7 red dot.

For the RMR mount I moved on to the Holosun HS507C X2. It has had 2 or 3 failure to feeds/eject over ~300 rounds. This could be due to the increased weight or the fact that I haven't put a single drop of gun oil on the gun before or after shooting close to 800 rounds. Either way, both mounts have been very reliable for 22lr standards.

The files have been designed to clear the rear sight screw. No need for supports.

While shooting the gun I didn't notice any issues with the mount. It did come loose where it was mounted to the firearm after a few hundred shots. I didn't use any thread locker at first. I added thread locker and the mounts have been fine.

The small posts are hard to make work on a printed part. They work to line it up, but don't be surprised if they break after or during installation. I didn't even bother to add them to the RMR plate for a reason.

Hardware:

  • 2x M4x16mm countersunk screws
  • Blue Loctite

Slicer settings:

  • PA6-CF
  • 4 walls 50% infill.

Use what works best for you. Walls are probably more important than infill since you're screwing into the walls.
