We welcome you to another exciting week at DEFCAD! Our new releases range the whole gamut of calibers and applications. A fun, recent development has been the advent of 3D printed ammo containers. You're no longer stuck with cardboard thanks to EmpireCadDesignz and his 9MM Print It Yourself Ammo Box. This easy to grip, fully printed design can hold up to 100 rounds of 9mm. We're already seeing users at DEFCAD making designs for every major caliber.
In more of the classic vein, we have the Nephilim Reinforced Lower Receiver v2.0 from Warfairy for the AR-10 platform. This design takes its cues from recent updates to AR-15 printable receivers, especially the re-enforcement of the buffer tower, while being fully compatible with the DPMS pattern. The AR-15 may be the most popular platform, but there is something to be said for sending a ton of .308 downrange. Following the Nephilim we have Black Lotus Coalition's Romulan Charger, which is chambered in .22LR. And what a mod this is! Using the Ruger 10-22 bolt, barrel and trigger package, the design is based on the Romulan Disrupter from the Star Trek franchise. This is an original and excellent use of 3D printing.

Over the past 3 years we've seen a trend to expand hybrid firearm parts kit choice beyond the AR-15 and Glock© platforms. The MAC-11 became the signal platform in these efforts. And its no wonder why developers and builders alike settled on it. The MAC-11 is cheap, readily available, simple in design, and its force-bearing components are separate from its regulated ones.
After the lull from 1972 to 2021, FreeMenDontAsk came swinging out the gate with the MacDaddy, which set the feature standards for almost every hybrid MAC-11 project afterwards. These features include: AR-15 fire control groups, AR-15 grips, standard 9mm magazines, front and back bolt connection points, and AR-15 stock configurations. The MacDaddy remains one of the most creative moments of integrating part availability and design simplicity in a DIY defense project.
In that same year, DB Firearms released the DB9, which better aligned the MAC-11 to modern carbine sensibilities and formal seamlessness. Much more of this project was printable than the MacDaddy, and the integrated top rail was sorely needed. Shortly after this, AWCY? unvelied the SuMac, which focused on magazine compatibility with the 71 round drum magazines for the Finnish Suomi submachine gun. The newfound ability to integrate entirely distinct ammo loading mechanisms into a standard bolt and barrel showcases why 3D gun printing as a craft has to much to recommend it.
While MiddletonMade's Mac N Cheese V1.5 was developed around the same time as these other variants, the true V2 of that project has only recently been released. This ambidextrous M11 lower receiver is the first M11 to utilize a last-round bolt hold open system (LRBHO), and is a rugged reinterpretation of the MacDaddy.
A few weeks back we shared the Principles of Firearms textbook at DEFCAD. While that book would be an excellent undergraduate course in its own right, the selection we have this week is the graduate series. An entire team from Rheinmetall Industries, under the direction of Dr. Germershausen, produced the Handbook of Weaponry in 1972. Over the next eight years it went through five editions before finally being translated into English in the early 1980s. At over 750 pages long and chock full of equations and diagrams, this text goes over every conceivable part and function related to firearms. This is not a history textbook but instead a walkthrough of every relevant chemical, physical, and mechanical principle and method one would need to become a serious firearms designer.
It is difficult to overstate just how impressive this text is. Try 1,450 diagrams, 373 sub-chapters, and copious tables and relevant mathematics. The Germans really know how to get this work done. Rheinmetall as a company has supplied the German military since at least the early 1900's.
It's conceivable that someone could spend an entire year, 2 pages a day, with this text and still have unread insights to spare. And still there is no fat anywhere in this book, and we endeavor to bring you anything else like it time and again at DEFCAD.
